July 2015 Newsletter

We seem to have already entered kitten season and although this sounds so cute, unfortunately there is nothing cute about kitten season. It’s the time of year when cats begin to breed, flooding animal shelters across the country with homeless and newborn kittens. It is a tremendous population explosion, and, virtually overnight, the number of kittens begins to exceed the number of homes available, so please always choose to adopt from your local shelter.

During kitten season, resources like food, money and space are stretched to the brink. And every year, millions of cats are euthanized simply because there aren’t enough families to adopt them. Animal Allies is determined to make a difference so we have stepped up our trapping to three nights a week instead of our usual one, until we close in December.
We started a TNR (Trap Neuter Return) program at Scaw Metals on the 4th July where we trapped and sterilized 25 cats. 16 females and 9 males that won’t be contributing to the overpopulation crisis and will be back on the 1st August for round two. Keep your fingers crossed for another successful trap. We will report back in the August newsletter.

This month we celebrated the spirit of giving in honour of the late Nelson Mandela. We spent Mandela Day in the Honeydew Squatter Camp entertaining children. A million thanks go to Totally Kosher who donated 1000 cupcakes for the day and every other person who so kindly donated chips, sweets and treats. MTN came on board and donated T-shirts while Sony donated balls which the kids thoroughly enjoyed playing with. The children were transformed into butterflies, fairies, batman and spiderman by the professional face painters. For lunch they enjoyed hotdogs and oranges. All in all the day was a huge success and all the kids went home with a sweet pack filled with lots of goodies.

We will holding our next Vaccination Day at Emthonjeni Community Centre in the Honeydew Squatter Camp on the 15th of August. Again we appeal for any donations towards this day. These days bring a lot of happiness and relief to the animals we treat, and without your support this would not be possible. Please contact me to arrange collection/delivery or any further information you require about this day.

Great news!! We will be hosting our second Golf Day on the 13th of October 2015 at the Houghton Golf Course. The last one was a great success and we have no doubt this one will be too. Should you wish to join us or donate a prize for the golfers or for an auction, please send me an email or contact me on 076 511 5451.
